Dumfries and Galloway is rich in history – shipping, smuggling, lead mining, quarrying of granite, the home Scottish Christianity, the struggle of the Convenantors and so much more.  We have a broad selection of new books relevant to our local history.  Valuable to both the casual reader and anyone interested in geneology .

The latest title to be published by our sister company GC Books of Wigtown is now available. Spitfires Over Scotland - First Blood to the Auxiliaries, the Life of Squadron Leader Patrick Gifford by Bill Simpson is an expertly researched and excellently written biography of this fascinating World War Two hero. Something of a daredevil, Gifford was a respected solicitor in his father's Castle Douglas firm but he was also an Auxiliary pilot racing at weekends in his sports car to take to the air with 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron at Turnhouse. When war broke out the Auxiliaries were the first to defend Edinburgh against an attack from the Luftwaffe, aiming to damage or destroy Navy ships anchored in the Forth. In his Spitfire, Gifford led the attack and became the first pilot to bring down an enemy plane over Britain in World War Two. Spitfires Over Scotland is now available from Solway Books price £12.99.
