Being an independent bookseller is becoming increasingly difficult faced with the rise of e readers, online retailing and heavy discounting from supermarkets. In the last five years nearly 2000 bookshops have closed and according to recent research by Experian, quoted in the Daily Telegraph, nearly 600 towns are now without a bookshop. Bookshops like ourselves are always looking for ways to keep the high street alive and one new venture that we are delighted to join up with is the Hive. This new idea from Gardners Books combines the advantages of online shopping whilst still supporting your local bookshop. It provides the wide selection of titles and competitive pricing offered by other well known on line retailers but you can choose to have your purchase delivered to your local bookshop, where it will be ready for you to collect. Solway Books, G C Books and Box of Frogs in Wigtown are the only bookshops in the whole of Dumfries and Galloway taking part in this new initiative.
