The book has been... | News The peaceful countryside of Dumfries and Galloway was once the scene of the biggest clash of the clans in Scotland.
For over half a century the Maxwell and Johnstone clans had waged a bitter feud with each other in a power struggle for the control of the Scottish West March, now modern Dumfriesshire.
In December 1593 the eighth Lord Maxwell decided to end the matter once and for all, little knowing that his action would lead to Scotland's largest and bloodiest clan battle.
In Death of a King's Man, Troublesome Wardens and The Battle of Dryfe Sands, Annan based author Stephen Maggs examines the political power struggle that led to the terrible loss of life near Lockerbie. In a second book, Where True Valour is Only to be Seen, the Battle of Sark, Stephen looks at one of the less well known encounters in the long running struggle between the Scots and English over the control of the Border country. Led by the great clan leader Hugh Douglas, the Scots overwhelmed the English in October 1448 causing humiliation for King Henry VI. Such was the extent of the Scots victory that it left them in a position of strength for the following decade.
With a military background and a life long interest in war gaming Stephen brings the wealth of his experience to bear in his examination of both battles. His extensive research details the armies, the weaponry, tactics and the aftermath of the battles. The books are ideal for re-enactors, local historians and anyone interested in the battles that helped to shape the Border Country we know today. The handy A5 size, along with the clear directions and photographs make them the perfect companion for anyone wishing to retrace the steps of our ancestors.
